(Elephant – die proboscidea) As the time for giving birth approaches, the mother needs close contact with some other females. so the females of her entire herd circles around, protecting her from all sides. Female Elephants give birth while standing and the birth itself lasts only a few minutes. The new born is helped to its feet by its mother and other females gathered around. Calves are able to stand on their own within minutes of birth.
