Banana Leaf Art

Art from Dried Banana Leaves

To the average eye, a dried banana leaf is just one shade of brown. But for a dedicated art teacher from Thalawa, Sri Lanka, these withered leaves hold a world of color and patterns, waiting to be transformed into timeless art.

Meet Niwandani Krishani, a teacher at Thalawa Pahala Thalawa School in Anuradhapura. She has pioneered a unique artistic technique—creating intricate paintings and portraits using dried banana leaves. She discovered that these leaves, often seen as waste, contain thousands of subtle colors and patterns that can be preserved within a work of art for years.

Teacher Krishani has been developing this new form of art, breathing life into what others consider dead foliage. Her captivating creations have earned her recognition, and she is currently busy creating a collection of stunning works for a major art exhibition.

Through her innovative approach, Niwandani Krishani is not only making beautiful art but also teaching us to look closer at the world around us and find beauty in the most unexpected places.
